Reorganize tests, work around optimization bug
* Encountered a gcc optimization bug in gcc 4.6.1 which seems to
be reordering related function calls eroneously. This bug seems
to be fixed in 4.6.2.
* Reorganize test code to get around this bug building on mingw,
and ubuntu 11.10, both of which use gcc 4.6.1
